The Hikma Framework

The Hikma Framework is the set of principles that underlies all of our programs and services.

This framework draws upon approaches from the humanities, knowledge mobilization, community engaged research, entrepreneurship, and design thinking. It is informed by learnings from our work with public scholars in genocide studies, nuclear policy, nursing, linguistics, and many other fields.

Create Space for New Narratives

The myth of the single “expert” in conventional research gets in the way of effective scholarship by undervaluing knowledges and experiences beyond the academy. When we create space for multiple perspectives, questions, and potential pathways for our work, we lay the groundwork for better scholarship.

Design with Intention

Effective scholars start by asking the right questions. Many strategies have emerged across industry, government, and the social sector to determine priorities and implement better approaches. We integrate tools and learnings across contexts to facilitate research planning and project design.

Put People Before Projects

Public scholarship is only as effective as the partnerships that sustain it within and beyond the academy. Building inroads with broader networks drives more relevant research in the short term and creates the potential for mutually beneficial opportunities in the long term. This is the “secret sauce” to translate research into policy, practice, and public good.

Test, Evaluate, and Refine

Sharing work in progress can be intimidating for deep thinkers. Testing ideas in safe, respectful environments builds confidence, supports learning, and fosters the conditions for co-creation. Reflection and evaluation enable us to make informed decisions and hold ourselves accountable.
